Johnny Tillery Johnson

Johnny Johnson, 70, of Breckenridge, passed away on Saturday, April 29, 2023. His graveside service at a private cemetery north of Jayton, Texas, will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 4, 2023. The service will be officiated by Johnny’s lifelong friend, Eddie Morales. His family will welcome friends for a visitation in the Melton-Kitchens Chapel of Memories from 6:00–7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3, 2023.

Johnny Tillery Johnson was born in Jayton, Texas, on August 28, 1952, to Ila Marie Johnson. He was raised by his beloved grandparents, Lucious Johnson, Idella Johnson, and Willie Dismukes. In high school, Johnny was a star athlete on the Jayton six-man football team. He graduated from Jayton ISD in 1970. Shortly after graduation, Johnny enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. In 1980, Johnny met his wife, Myra Jane, and relocated to Breckenridge, Texas. In the 40 years that followed, they would raise three girls: Jenisa, Saprina, and Shayna.

Johnny was a friend to almost everyone he met. He is described in the Breckenridge community as “one of the best guys I’ve known” when people speak about him. For years, Johnny had a dedicated love of fishing and showed that in building his own reels and customizing tackle boxes, which he gifted to his grandchildren. Johnny dabbled in many professions including being an EMT and a mechanic, but he was best known for being a master gardener.

Johnny is survived by his wife, Myra Jane Cheyne Johnson of Abilene, Texas; daughters, Jenisa Johnson Vicars and husband Charles Vicars of Newcastle, Texas, Saprina Johnson of Abilene, and Shayna Johnson and husband Clay Baker of Abilene; brothers, William Johnson of Breckenridge, and Byron Rogers and Earl Rogers, both of San Antonio, Texas; great-aunt and -uncle, Olender and Ledale Jones of Smithville, Texas; and cousins, Lindas Barnes, Bonnie Turner, and Patricia Eason, all of Houston, Texas. Johnny is also survived by five grandchildren who he absolutely adored: Levyn Sydelle Cody-Johnson, Roger Tillery Bane Baker, Henry Charles Alexander Vicars, Jocelyn Oletta Jane Baker, and Zedrick Jo Hadrian Vicars, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Johnny was preceded in death by his mother, Ila Marie Johnson; grandfather, Lucious Johnson; and grandmothers, Idella Johnson and Willie Dismukes.

The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Billie O’Neal and the O’Neal family for being such great friends to our father and making him part of your family. Memorial donations in Johnny’s name can be made to an organization or charity of the donor’s choice and can be left at Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home.
