The Dos Gallos Family Restaurant owners and staff were joined this morning, May 1, by their staff, family, friends, as well as Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce members and others from the community, for a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the business’ first anniversary.
Alex and Ami Contreras and John and Laura Contreras opened up Dos Gallos in May 2022, serving a variety of food, ranging from burgers and fries to grilled salmon and vegetables. They recently updated the menu, adding some new items and lowering a few prices, Alex said.
The brothers are the grandsons of the late Ernie and Rosa Calsoncin, who founded Breckenridge’s iconic restaurant Ernie’s Spanish Kitchen in 1974. Dos Gallos is located at 700 W. Walker, where Lewis and Lili Anguiano ran L&L Family Restaurant for many years. For a brief time in 2021, the restaurant was known as Texas Star, and in July of that year, Lucy Whitmire moved her Buckaroo Burgers into the building, operating there until the Contreras brothers took over in 2022.
“I want to say a shout-out — give respect — to my grandparents, Ernie and Rosa; my uncles, Ronnie and Dennis Calsoncin; Lee Olson for everything he’s taught me; Lewis Anguiano; and Lucy Whitmire,” Alex said. “And, of course, thank to anyone who’s a part of this, family and friends who have helped us out along the way, our church family, both sides.”
Ami Contreras echoed his comments, adding, “We appreciate all our employees, past and present. We wouldn’t have made it without them. Family support, church support, it all has been great. And our customers. Our customers are awesome and very caring. They’ve really given us a chance.”
Dos Gallos is open seven days a week. On Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, it is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 5 to 9 p.m. On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, it is open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 5 to 9 p.m. with breakfast served from 6 to 10 a.m. On Sundays, it is open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is closed on Sunday nights.
