Shirley Scurlock
Shirley Scurlock, 95, of Merkel, Texas, passed away April 1, 2023, at Merkel Nursing Center. She was born May 13, 1927, in Orangefield, Texas. Her parents were Angie Huffman Spell and Emery Spell. She attended Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur, Texas. She married Joseph Theodore Scurlock on March 24, 1945, in Kountze, Texas. She graduated from nursing school in Amarillo, Texas in 1959. She worked as a nurse until 1987 in Beaumont, Irving, Jasper, Amarillo and Breckenridge, Texas. Shirley attended the Assembly of God churches in several cities.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and all her siblings, Daniel Spell, Shelby Williams, Joyce Boullion, Howard Spell and Daniel Spell.
She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Jo Brumfield and husband Danny of Trent, Texas; her son, Teddy Darrell Scurlock and wife Windy of Irving, Texas; three granddaughters, Dana, Haley, and Sabrina; and one grandson, Elijah; one great-granddaughter, Faith; one great-grandson, Kaiden; two great-great-granddaughters, Kendrix and Amelia; and her sister-in-love, Carol (Bucky) Spell. She leaves behind a host of friends and family, including nieces and nephews. Her nephew, Casey Wilson, sat with her immediate family, when she entered heaven’s portals.
A service will be held Friday, April 7, at 2:00 p.m. in the Breckenridge Cemetery Chapel with Sherry Lyle officiating. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in the Breckenridge City Cemetery. Services have been entrusted to Morehart Mortuary.
