Stephens County citizens have a couple of elections in May, and the deadlines to register to vote are approaching soon.

On May 7, will be the Texas Constitutional Amendment Special Election. There are two proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution on the ballot, both having to do with property taxes. Proposition 1 would limit school property taxes paid by the disabled and elderly, and Proposition 2 would increase the homestead exemption for school property taxes from $25,000 to $40,000.

For the exact wording of the propositions, click here for the Texas Secretary of State’s explanation.

Additionally, the League of Women Voters of Texas, a non-partisan organization, has published a voters guide for the election. It includes information about constitutional amendments, the voting process, and, on pages 5 and 6, details about the two proposed amendments, including the pros and cons of each one. Click here for that guide.

The last day to register to vote in the Constitutional Amendment Special Election is Thursday, April 7. If you are already registered to vote, you do not need to register again. To see if you are already registered to vote, click here. For information on how to register to vote, click here.

The runoff election for the Primary Election that took place earlier this month will be on May 24. That ballot will include a runoff between State Rep. Glenn Rogers and Mike Olcott for State Representative District 60, as well as several statewide runoffs.

The deadline to register to vote in the runoff will be Monday, April 25. Note: if you are already registered to vote, you do not need to register again.
