Yvonne Melton Gilbert
Yvonne Melton Gilbert passed away on Sunday, August 29, 2021. She was born on May 31, 1938, in Abilene, Texas, to parents Don and Mary Melton.
She grew up in Baird, Texas, and graduated high school in Breckenridge, Texas. Yvonne attended Texas Woman’s University and the University Texas/Galveston branch nursing school. She met the love of her life, Weems Gilbert, in Galveston, Texas. He was stationed in Houston with the United States Air Force. Yvonne and Weems were married on November 29, 1957. They moved from Houston, Texas, to Waco, Texas, then to Orlando, Florida, before making their home in Forest, Mississippi, in 1960. The couple had three children: Valerie, Don, and Leiah.
Yvonne was an active member of the Forest United Methodist Church, where she was the chairman of the Bereavement Committee for several years. She was also an active member of the Scott County Junior Auxiliary. Yvonne was a school board member for two terms for Forest School District and was also a co-owner of Gilbert Egg, Inc.
Yvonne’s survivors include her husband of 63 years, Weems Gilbert; children, Valerie Simmons (Chris) of Crowley, Texas, Don (Emily) Gilbert of Lake, Mississippi, AND Leiah (Paul) Bridges of Forest, Mississippi; grandchildren, Steven (Brittany), Matthew, Katie, Amy, Meagan, and Sam; great-grandchildren, Liam, Jude, and Naomi; along with her sister, Sharon (Lance) Kitchens of Breckenridge, Texas.
Preceding Mrs. Gilbert in death were her parents, Donald F. Melton and Mary Alice Lawrence Melton.
Funeral services will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 3, 2021, at the Ott & Lee Funeral Home Chapel in Forest, Mississippi. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the start of the service at the funeral home.
