Ada Faye Smith, 82, of Woodson, was surrounded by her family when she passed away at her residence on Wednesday, August 19, 2021. Her memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 21, 2021, at the First Baptist Church in Woodson, with Pastor Jeremy Smith officiating. The family will welcome friends for a visitation in the fellowship hall of the church following the memorial service. The Service has been entrusted to the staff of Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home.

Ada Faye Hitchcock was born in San Angelo, Texas, on April 9, 1932, to Jack Howard and Verdie Hitchcock. Throughout the years, Ada called Colorado City, where she lived with her parents and six other brothers and sisters, as her hometown. While going to school, Ada helped the family out by working in the cotton fields or shucking maize. She quit school in the 11th grade so that she could devote more time to helping her family. Years later, Ada moved to Woodson, where she earned her GED, then drove back and forth to college in Abilene where she earned a degree in accounting. She later owned and operated Ada’s Grocery in Woodson.

On April 18, 1961, Ada married Elga Ray Smith. The two were happily married for 60 years before her passing.

The couple raised five children, and the family continued to grow to add seventeen grandchildren and twenty-six-and-a-half great-grandchildren. Ada enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, sewing, cooking, and shopping. She found inspiration in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always liked to take part in the activities they enjoyed. Ada believed that love and communication are the two things that made a family a family, not blood nor some piece of paper.

Ada was preceded in death by her parents; daughters, Lynn Doyle and Kay Clark; sisters, Doris Mitchell and Ruthie McArther; and brothers, Scott Hitchcock, Billy Hitchcock, and LeRoy Hitchcock.

She is survived by her husband, Elga Ray Smith of Woodson; sons, Mike Smith and wife Mary of Midland, Texas, and Charles “Bo” Smith and wife Glenna of Hobbs, New Mexico, and Casey Smith and wife, LaReka of Woodson; sister, Martha Henry of Coahoma, Texas; along with seventeen grandchildren and twenty-six-and-a-half great grandchildren.

Memorial donations in Ada’s name can be made to an organization or charity of the donor’s choice and may be left at the Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home office. Condolences can be made online at meltonkitchens.com.
