Last week, in the Texas FFA State Forage Judging competition at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, the Breckenridge High School team finished in third place in our area and was named Pecan Valley District Champions.

The team includes Sydney Garland, Kason Knight, Rylan Sims and Jackson Woodward.

In the State Forage Judging competition, students apply their knowledge of various forage species to evaluate hay based on physical properties, identify species common to pastures and complete quiz that tests team members’ knowledge of different aspects of forages. More specifically, the event is composed of five sections, hay judging, grading hay of its quality, plant identification, and two tests based on knowledge and mathematics related to agriculture industry.

“Every student that competed has steadily gotten better throughout this judging season,” Breckenridge FFA Sponsor Austin Hanna said in a news release. “We are all extremely proud of all of our kids.”
