Mary Johnson, 86, of Stephenville, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 8, 2021. Her graveside service will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 14, 2021, at the Hart Cemetery, with Werth Mayes officiating.

Mary Elizabeth Gravois was born on August 16, 1935, to parents, Armond and Edvige Gravois of Jeanerette, Louisiana. Most of her young adult life was spent in the Jeanerette area, and she attended St. Joseph Convent, taught by the religious Sisters of Mercy.

Mary met Joe Johnson in the early 1960s and then married her lifetime companion on March 8, 1963, in Iberia, Louisiana. The couple had one son, Chris. They lived in the Stephenville, Texas, area since 1994. While in Stephenville, Mary was active in the Pythian Sisters Organization and attended the Cowboy Church. She cherished both her role as a housewife and taking care of those around her that she dearly loved. In her spare time, Mary enjoyed her travels back to Jeanerette to visit friends and family.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Whitt Johnson; parents, Edvige Fortier Gravois and P. Armand Gravios.

She is survived by her only child, Chris Allen Johnson of Stephenville; brother, Carol J. Gravios; sister-in-law, Patti Murphy Gravois; sister, Elodie Gravois Smith; and a beloved brother-in-law, Mike Smith, all of Jeanerette, Louisiana.

Memorials in Mary’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society and may be left at the Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home office. Condolences can be made at meltonkitchens.com.
