Local Elks Lodge #1480 held their annual Hoop Shoot free throw contest for kids ages 8 to 13 on Saturday, March 6, at L.T. Cook Gymnasium at Breckenridge High School.

Twelve-year-old Aaden Mendez, won the 12-13-year-old category. Truett Trammel, 11, took first place in the 10–11-year-old category, and Alex Monge, 10, placed second. Also taking part in this year’s competition was Angel Whealy, 8.

Mendez and Trammel will advance to the district competition in Arlington on March 27. Last year, Mendez advanced to the state competition, where he placed third. However, because of the coronavirus, this year’s competition is scheduled for only the local and district level, the organization’s website states. Since there is no state competition, they have added extra competitions at the district level to allow participants to compete for bigger prizes.
