Ruth Shockey

Ruth Shockey was born Sept. 13, 1938, in Coryell County, Texas, to Eugene Henry Lewis and Ellen Ozell Latham Lewis. She graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1956 where she was active in 4H and Band.

Ruth married Gerald Dowell Shockey May 25, 1957, at First Baptist Church, Breckenridge, Texas. From early in their marriage, they were active at First Baptist Church in Abilene, Arlington and Plano, Texas.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Gerald; her three children: Sharon Shockey Davis and  husband Richard, Sarah Shockey Williams and husband Joe and  Stephen Shockey and wife Daphane; grandchildren: Jeremy McHenry, Jaimee McHenry, Jedidiah Davis and wife Megan, Jessica Gonzales, Leilia Panui and  Justin Shockey; great-grandchildren: Leia McHenry, Emma McHenry, Owen Davis. Sisters: Mary Gadberry and  husband Hugh, Wanda Souter, Judith Couchman, Virginia Lewis, Modiene Garland, Anita Bird and  husband Bill; and sister-in-law Marinell Miller and  husband Jack, along with many nieces and  nephews, who she loved as if they were her own. Additionally her best friend Dorothy ‘Fergie’ Offield was like another sister.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and  Ozell Lewis; brothers Richard Lewis, Gene Lewis, Henry Lewis, and  Jimmy Souter; sister Carolyn Lewis Bingham and  husband Pat; and  great-grandson Jeremy McHenry, Jr.

She started working for Richardson Medical Center in 1970 until 1975 when the family moved to Alexandria, VA. There she worked at Mt. Vernon Hospital until 1978 when the family moved back to Plano, TX, where she resumed working at Richardson Medical Center until 1988 when she retired to care for her mother-in-law.

Ruth was “mom” to the many friends who were brought home by Sharon, Sarah & Stephen over the years, loving them all unconditionally. She had a rare gift of making each & every person in her life feel loved & that they were the most special person in her world.

Funeral services for Ruth will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, September 12, 2020 at the Unity Presbyterian Church in Turnersville. A visitation will be held at 12:30 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Turnersville Cemetery.
