Today, Wednesday, Aug. 19, is the first day of school for students in the Breckenridge Independent School District.

Drivers need to drive safely in the school zones, and remember cell phone use — for texting and/or talking — is banned in school zones by Texas law and violators could receive a fine of up to $200. Additionally, tickets usually double for speeding in an active school zone.

Also, school buses will be in and around town picking up and dropping off school kids. Texas law states that all drivers must:

  • Stop for flashing red lights on a school bus, regardless of which direction you’re headed.
  • Continue your trip only once the bus has moved, the flashing lights stop flashing or the bus driver signals it’s OK to pass.
