Ruben Cortez, 61, of Woodson, passed away July 4, 2020. The memorial service will be held in the Chapel of Memories at Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home on July 17, 2020, at 10 a.m.

Ruben was born December 16, 1958, in Throckmorton, Texas. He grew up in Woodson and was a proud Woodson Cowboy. He joined the Navy not long after graduating. He finished up college as an electrician in the Navy.

Ruben had a passion for his family, friends, and of course the Dallas Cowboys. If the Cowboys were playing, Ruben was watching them in his Cowboys jersey that you would see him in often. He passed on his favorite holiday; July 4th was one of his best times. He always made sure he had plenty of fireworks and would go to downtown Woodson where he would pop them for anyone and everyone who wanted to watch could enjoy them. You would never see Ruben without a smile on his face. It is the one thing people remember about him most, his smile and infectious laugh. Ruben loved helping people and would give his shirt off his back if he could. He had a great passion for music like rock and roll, along with Texas Country and older Country music and even some Spanish. He was a big amusement park fan and the bigger the rollercoaster the better.

One of his biggest accomplishments and greatest love were those for his children and grandchildren. Being a dad and pawpaw were one thing he loved. You could always chat with Ruben and hear a story or two or ten about any of them. He loved to brag on them and any of their accomplishments.

Ruben is preceded in death by his step-father Luis SIlva, grandfather, and aunt.

Ruben is survived by his mother, Emily Silva; his father, Alejandro Cortez; his son, Brandon Cortez and his wife Amy along with four grandchildren, Aubrye, Branson, Bennett, and Sheppard Cortez of Graham; daughter, D’Jean Thompson and her husband Truitt along with three grandchildren, Trace, Haigan, and Kaisan Thompson of Breckenridge; sister, Linda Lee and her husband Dean of Ivan; brother, Alex Cortez of Breckenridge; sister, Barbara Herring and her husband Butch of Breckenridge; and sister, Emmy Munoz and her husband Mario of Woodson; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Woodson Volunteer Fire Department and may be left at Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home. Condolences can be made online at meltonkitchens.com
