Letter to the Editor: Local Tax Office to stop processing watercraft registrations

June 29
14:01 2020

NOTICE TO RESIDENTS OF STEPHENS COUNTY:

The Stephens County Tax Office will no longer be processing any Texas Parks and Wildlife transactions.   This includes title transfers and/or registrations of any water craft. It does not include, of course, boat trailers which fall under the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles Department. The last day to perform any of these transactions in our office will be on Friday, July 10, 2020, at 3:30 p.m.

There are a number of reasons for this decision, the most significant being an increase in responsibilities with Elections Administration, an increase in responsibilities related to Ad Valorem duties as a result of Senate Bill 2 requirements, in conjunction with a reduction in the number of our staff.

This decision was not made lightly, and we apologize in advance for any inconveniences this will cause the public. All boat registration renewals may be mailed in to Austin. Renewals are sent out well in advance to allow for the time involved in processing by mail. They may also be renewed online by going to www.texas.gov. You will also find a wealth of information on this website along with phone numbers and addresses of the Texas Parks & Wildlife office in Abilene, Texas. Title transfers, of course, will have to be handled by the Abilene office.

We thank you in advance for your understanding in this matter and also for your patience as we likely will be experiencing longer wait times in our office, especially during election times and tax time.

We look forward to serving the citizens and taxpayers of Stephens County in the future to the very best of our ability.

Sincerely,

Christie Latham
Stephens County Tax Assessor/Collector
Election Administrator
