Edna Smart, 95 of Breckenridge passed away surrounded by her children on February 21, 2020. Graveside services will be 1 p.m., February 24, 2020, at Plum Branch Cemetery with Mark Wilcox officiating. Interment will be under the direction of Melton Kitchens Funeral Home.

Edna Pearl Preston was born October 17, 1924, in Louisiana to parents, Charles and Estelle Preston. She was the oldest of 10 children. Edna met Douglas Preston Smart while she was waitressing in a cafe in McCamey, Texas. Doug fell in love with the little red headed waitress and they married on November 13, 1948. They were married 64 years before he passed away.

Edna loved her family, and was always there for them no matter what. She was a “nurse” to many, and was always doctoring them. She took great care of her dad, mom, and mother-in-law in their later years. Granny Edna made many fond memories with her kids and grandkids by correcting them; this brings about memories of her chasing them down with curlers in her hair and wielding her weapon of choice – a fly swatter. When she told her kids or grandkids they could go down the street to play for 30 minutes, she didn’t mean 31 minutes! This often resulted in her chasing you back home with the dreaded fly swatter! She loved collecting angel figurines, pitcher and bowl sets, and later in life, stuffed animals. Edna and Doug loved going fishing with her dad, Charles Preston. Ironically, she married a man whose middle name was the same as her maiden name. Edna always had a smile on her face and was well known for her pecan pies. No matter how many family members use her recipe to make pecan pies, they never measure up to hers.

Edna loved her Villa Haven family, and was often seen flying down the halls in her wheelchair, using her feet to propel herself while holding a cup of coffee in one hand, and a glass of tea in the other: beware anyone in her way! The family would like to thank the staff of Villa Haven for the loving care they provided for this little spit fire the last six years.

Edna loved her church family, and taught Sunday school in her younger years. She loved the Lord and singing hymns. She also loved packing shoe box gifts for Operation Christmas Child every year.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Estelle Preston, her loving husband Doug Smart, 2 infant sisters, 3 brothers, and infant daughter Sheree Marlene.

Edna is survived by daughters, Judy Wilcox and husband Jim of Breckenridge, and Connie Heatley and husband Bill of Breckenridge; sisters, Joy Rushing and Rowens Parks; brothers, Geroge Preston and Bobby Preston; grandchildren, Lisa Johnson and husband Rick, Mark Wilcox and wife Tanya, Amy Hare and husband John, Chad Wilcox and wife Krista, and Jeremy Heatley and wife Gillian; 14 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials can be made to the local Meals on Wheels or the charity of choice and can left at Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home. Condolences can be made online at www.meltonkitchens.com.
