Mary Helen Escalon was born June 26, 1952, in Calvert, Texas, to Elano and Clara Escalon and from there the family moved to Breckenridge. While working at Davis Manufacturing she met Marcus Reyes. Marcus was smitten with Mary, but in the beginning she was not interested due to his long hair and beard. After many attempts by Marcus, she gave in and went on a date. It was on that date, Mary knew that he was the one and the two fell in love. The couple were married almost fifty years.

Memaw, as what her grandkids, called her was known as one of the most caring and compassionate women. She enjoyed every aspect of working for the public and was known for spreading her infectious smile and signature laugh. Many will remember that from her time working at the local, Ray’s Grocery. She placed God on a pedestal and witnessed daily to others in her community. While never knowing the impact she made on others here on Earth, Mary found joy in taking care of others, especially her family. One of the phrases she would say to her grandchildren was that she loved them “To the Moon and Infinity.” She referred to them all as her grand angels and love them like no other. Her family and friends were literally her great achievement on this earth.

She enjoyed garage sales with the kids and cooking, feeding others with faith and her good food. Being the most selfless person ever, she always put others first. Mary knew no strangers. She never judged a book by its cover and would be a witness with her favorite saying, “Give it to God.” Mary never gave up that mentality to witness to others all the way to the very end. Memaw will not be forgotten and know that we love and miss you already. Her family and friends know this is not the end. We will all meet again, and as she would say, “Go with God.”

Mary is survived by her husband, Marcus of Breckenridge; daughter Alicia Whitaker and husband Eric of Breckenridge; sisters, Teresa Valdez of Hillsboro Oregon, Sandy Escalon of Throckmorton, Texas, Sylvia Contreas of Throckmorton, Texas, and Mary Lou Cardenas of West Liberty, Iowa; brothers, John Escalon of Dumas, Texas, Joe Escalon of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Tony Escalon of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Ricky Escalon of Throckmorton, Texas; four grandchildren; and many loved friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Mike Escalon and Dee Escalon; and sisters, Brenda Navarro and Carmen Sumerall.

Memorials can be made to Stephens County Senior Citizen Center. Those memorials can be left at the Melton Kitchens Funeral Home office. Condolences can be made at www.meltonkitchens.com.
