Billy Nelson, Jr.. 91. of Breckenridge passed away on November 25, 2019. Cremation has taken place. and he will be buried in Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene. The interment will be under the direction of Melton-Kitchens Funeral home.
Billy Nelson, Jr. was born August 5, 1928. to Billy Nelson, Sr. and Rena of Breckenridge. Billy graduated high school in Breckenridge and lived his entire life in the community that he loved and served for his entire life. Billy spent a large part of his adult life in the United States Air Force and retired as an E-6 Tech Sargent. While in the service to his country, he fought in the Vietnam War. The Vietnam War was something that he didn’t speak of much. Billy knew he was blessed to serve his country and survive the conflict, so he could come back to his community and give back. After his retirement, he spent the last leg of his journey serving the VFW facility in Stephens County for decades. The memories that his friends and community recall is the numerous projects that he headed up while at the VFW here in Breckenridge. Those that knew him knew that Billy took his service to this country and the VFW extremely serious. Those are the things that Bill Nelson, Jr. would want to be remembered of. God bless him for his service. You will be missed.

The organization aims to raise $4,000, which could be tripled to $12,000 through various matching programs, including the NewsMatch program and the Rural Partner Fund, which is supported by several major foundations.
Founded in 2017 by journalists Tony Pilkington and Carla McKeown, the Breckenridge Texan provides daily local news coverage, weekly newsletters, photo galleries, a community calendar, and obituaries. The outlet serves both local residents and people outside the community seeking information about Breckenridge and Stephens County, including potential new residents and businesses. They chose the non-profit structure to maintain local control of news coverage while minimizing the financial burden on the community.
