BHS boys, girls track teams enjoy dinner ahead of Monday’s Area track meet
Members of the Breckenridge High School boys and girls track teams, along with their coaches, were treated to a dinner in the park on Sunday night. The meal, which was served in the pavilion at Breckenridge City Park, was organized by several of the track team members’ mothers to show their appreciation for the teams as they head to the Area track meet in Jacksboro on Monday.
BHS Head Track Coach Mark Young said he is excited about the prospects of the teams and how they have performed so far.
“It’s very exciting; the kids have bought in,” he said. “I just kind of jumped in at the right time and got a good group of kids that worked hard and really sail out every week, and it makes my job real easy.”
The coach said the students have been getting better, working harder every week, and that the Area track meet is not their finish line.
“We’re looking for bigger and better things,” Young said. “We’d like to win the Area championship and get everybody out to Regionals and then win the Regional championship and get teams out to State and win the State championships. That’s our goal right now.”
Young coaches the running and relay events, and Coach Colby Hartfield coaches long jump and helps with coaching the relay events. Coach Michael Lewis coaches the hurdles and triple-jump events; Coach Brian Valenzuela coaches distance and high jump; and Coach Berry Bowman coaches the throwing events.
“Tomorrow, I know everybody wants to run fast and win the championship,” Young said. “But I’ll tell them tomorrow our number one goal is to finish the race and place in the top four and then go on to Regional.”
