On Wednesday evening, Breckenridge High School senior Braden Campbell signed a National Letter of Intent in the BHS Athletic Facility and Fine Arts Center’s media room.

Surrounded by friends and family, including his parents, Ashley and Russell Creager and Joel and Jami Campbell, and sister, Addison Campbell, he agreed to attend West Texas A&M University in Canyon on a track scholarship. In the spring, Campbell tied the BHS pole vault record, which is 15 feet, 6 inches, set by Brian Knight in 1992, and qualified for the state track meet.

At the signing event Wednesday, Campbell was introduced by Breckenridge Independent School District Athletic Director Casey Hubble. After the signing, two of his coaches spoke about Campbell.

Track coaches Donny Funderburg and Brian Valenzuela talked about Campbell’s strong work ethic and focus, as well as his future. “I challenge you; 15-6 isn’t good enough. Go for 16,” Funderburg said. “But, also, remember there is so much more. This can’t be the best day of your life. Get your degree and a job.”

Valenzuela agreed. “Use this as a launch pad to all the things you are meant to be,” he said.
