Eighteen cooking teams, including two local teams, are on hand today to compete in the Breckenridge’s VFW Auxiliary 7767 Steak Cookoff  at the VFW, 216 E. Williams.

Teams from around the state and country showed up to compete in the contest, including Steak Cookoff Association reigning World Champion Terry Roan from Krum. One contestant, Matt Overson, drove more than 10 hours from Des Moines, Iowa, to compete in the contest.

Because today’s contest is sanctioned by SCA, winners receive points toward the organization’s championship competition. Overson said he travels around the country chasing points. He said he competed in 20 contests last year and expects to compete in 60 contests this year. He said he is currently second place in points.

Roan said he expects to compete in 40 to 50 competitions this year, chasing points. He said there are two contests for World Championship, one for earning the most points and becoming the Points World Champion and one for winning a sanctioned cookoff, like the one in Breckenridge today, that automatically gets the winner invited to the World Championship. Roan won a sanctioned cookoff last year.

Overson said he and Roan competed in a recent cookoff and he came in fifth on points and Roan came in fourth.

In addition to being a qualifier for the SCA, today’s contest also serves as a fundraiser for the local VFW Auxiliary.

Contestants are competing in three categories – steak, one bite challenge and appetizers – and cash prizes will be awarded in each category. The awards will be presented at 5 p.m.

At 6 p.m., the VFW Auxiliary will be serving steak meals, which will include a steak, baked potato and salad, for $20 per plate. The meal is being cooked by the VFW and will be open the public. The money raised will be used to support the auxiliary.

As an ongoing fundraiser, the group offers steak meals every second Saturday of the month and hamburgers on the fourth Saturday of each month. The meals are served between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. and offered on a first come, first served basis until the meals are sold out.
