The National Weather Service and The Weather Channel are predicting a high chance of rain and/or thunderstorms tonight in the Brock area, just in time for the Buckaroos vs. the Eagles football game. The Breckenridge High School Buckaroo football team is scheduled to play Brock High School tonight, Sept. 21, with a kickoff time at 7 p.m. in Eagle Stadium.

At about 2 p.m. today, the Weather Channel forecast was showing an 85 percent chance of rain/thunderstorms at 7 p.m., increasing to 95 percent chance by 9 p.m. The National Weather Service predicts a 100 percent chance of precipitation in the Brock area tonight, with no specific time given. The NWS’s forecast describes the weather as “showers and possibly a thunderstorm” and predicts 3 to 4 inches of rain in that area tonight.

Because of the rain chances this week, several high school football games scheduled in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex area were moved from Friday to Thursday night and others have moved up their start times tonight, according to the DallasNews.com SportsDay page. The Breckenridge-Brock game was originally scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

In 2014, the Brock and Breckenridge played in Buckaroo Stadium. About half an hour after the game started, lightning was detected and a storm was building on the horizon. The game was delayed, and everyone took shelter. Neither team wanted to forfeit the game, so the game resumed once the rain stopped. The game finally wrapped up after midnight, with a loss for the Buckaroos.

UIL rules state that “when thunder is heard within 30 seconds of a visible lightning strike, or a cloud-to-ground lightning bolt is seen, the thunderstorm is close enough to strike your location with lightning. Suspend play for thirty minutes and take shelter immediately. Once activities have been suspended, wait at least thirty minutes following the last sound of thunder or lightning flash prior to resuming an activity or returning outdoors.”

The Breckenridge Texan will provide more information, if it becomes necessary, throughout the night.

For those planning to stay in Breckenridge tonight, you can listen to the Buckaroo game on KLXK radio, FM 93.5 at klxkkrooradio.com – just click on the green button that says “Click to listen to Buckaroo Sports.” The game can also be heard through the KLXK Facebook page; search on Facebook for “Klakescountry935”.

The Breckenridge forecast for tonight is, likewise, for a 100 percent chance of rain, possibly thunderstorms. The rain is expected to continue through Sunday and pick up again on Wednesday.
