The Breckenridge Texan received two awards recently.

TASB Media Honor Roll
At Monday night’s school board meeting, Breckenridge Independent School District Superintendent Tim Seymore presented Breckenridge Texan Publisher Tony Pilkington with a certificate recognizing the news website as a member of the 2018 Media Honor Roll for the Texas Association of School Boards.

According to information from the TASB, the Media Honor Roll recognizes media representatives statewide for fair and balanced reporting of news about public schools. Media from newspapers, radio and television stations, and online publications across the state were honored by their local school districts.

“We are honored to accept this award,” Pilkington said. “We do strive to present fair and balanced news every day, and we appreciate our work being recognized for the effort.”

Criteria for the district selection included the media representative’s efforts to get to know the superintendent, board president, and the district’s mission and goals; report school news in a fair, accurate, and balanced manner; give a high profile to positive news about schools; visit the schools; and maintain a policy of no surprises by sharing information with school officials.

“Districts across Texas appreciate these reporters for their balanced and accurate approach to sharing both the challenges facing our schools and the successes achieved by local teachers, students, and school boards. Their work aids local communities in focusing on the goal of providing the best public schools we can for every child,” Teresa Flores, TASB president, said in a news release.

Certificate of Appreciation
Last week, Breckenridge’s North Elementary School staff presented the Breckenridge Texan with a Certificate of Appreciation for the website’s continued support of the school and BISD. Several other local businesses were also honored similarly.

On the North Elementary Facebook page, the staff posted an explanation: “Our staff members were charged with a mission today: Go out into the community and present certificates of appreciation to some of our local business supporters!”

The project is part of the school district’s “Together is Better” philosophy.

“The education system is one of the most important aspects of the community,” Pilkington said. “We enjoy covering the schools and all of their activities and are looking forward to the upcoming school year.”
