The Breckenridge Elks Lodge #1480 donated items for the special education and life skills classes in Moran Independent School District and Breckenridge High School on Friday evening.

Liz Walls, Special Education Director for MISD, and Danielle Chisholm, LifeSkills teacher at BHS, were on hand to accept the donations from the local Elks Lodge members.

The donation included “wobble seats,” flexible seats designed for kids who like to move around in their chairs, as well as other items to enhance learning and provide sensory input.

The Elks Lodge gets grants from the national foundation, which is celebrating its 150th birthday this year, to support organizations in the local and area communities, said Lynda Justus, Exalted Ruler.

The Breckenridge Elks Lodge also has ongoing fundraisers to generate donations for their scholarships and to pay for children with special needs to attend the Texas Elks Camp. On Friday, Aug. 31, the Elks Lodge, located at 6074 FM 2231, will host a benefit dance to raise funds for children to attend the camp.

The dance will feature DJ Lowdown, aka Joe Mirelez, playing Tejano, country, Texas country, hip hop and R&B music. The dance will be from 8 p.m. until midnight, and the entry fee will be $8 per person. It will be open to the public. The bar will be open, and food will be served from 6 to 8 p.m. A silent auction that night will also raise funds.

Elks Lodge #1480 Sweetheart Lena Stockton said that last year the organization gave a $1,500 scholarship at BHS, in addition to sending kids to the Texas Elks Camp. Her goal this year is to raise $5,000 so that they can send at least seven children to the camp.

In addition to fundraisers, such as the dance, the organization also collects donations through local businesses that display red plastic piggy banks near their cash registers. The Elks Lodge collects the donations and uses them to finance the camp trips.
