Stephens Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will host a Mental Health Awareness Seminar on Thursday, May 17, at 6 p.m. at the National Theatre in downtown Breckenridge.

The seminar will be open to the public and free of charge. Refreshments will be served.

Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from local community experts as they speak on topics ranging from adult mental health to children and teens with mental illness.

One in five Americans are affected by mental illness, according to information provided by SMHA. Millions of Americans face the reality of living with the condition every day. It affects the young and old, male and female, individuals of every race, educational and income levels.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, “There is a virus spreading across America that harms the 1 in 5 Americans that live with mental health conditions. It shames them into silence. It prevents them from seeking help. And in some cases, it takes lives. What virus are we talking about? It’s stigma.”

Stephens Memorial Hospital Auxiliary wants to spread the idea that “stigma” can be cured by sharing problems and news with others and ease the stigma of mental illness.

Breckenridge and surrounding areas have access to several highly skilled and experienced Licensed Professional Counselors within a 75-mile radius.
