Local man dies in Abilene raceway incident

Jon Blackshear, 52, of Breckenridge died Saturday, May 5, after sustaining injuries during an on-track incident at the Big Country Raceway dragstrip in Abilene.

Blackshear came from a family of race car drivers, including his father, the late Jim Blackshear, and his brother, Don Blackshear, owner of Blackshear Racing Engines in Pennsylvania. He leaves behind his wife, Tracey Blackshear of Breckenridge, and two sons, Eli Blackshear and Ethan Blackshear.

Big Country Raceway held a church service and special prayer service Sunday morning for the Blackshear family. Funeral services are pending with Morehart Mortuary.

In addition to being a drag racer, Blackshear was also a pilot and worked at Ezell Aviation as a mechanic.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Blackshear’s family and friends during this most difficult time,” read a statement issued by Big Country Raceway owner Sterling Robertson.
