The Texas Department of Transportation is in the design phase of a project that would reconstruct U.S. 183 (North Breckenridge Avenue) from U.S. 180 (Walker Street) to just north of the Breckenridge city limits.

The approximately one-mile project would be similar in scope to projects currently underway on U.S. 180 East and U.S. 183 South in Breckenridge, and would include the following improvements:

  • Reconstruction of the existing pavement, which has outlived its useful life.
  • Construction of concrete sidewalks that meet ADA compliance.
  • Construction of concrete curbs and gutters.
  • Drainage improvements.

The proposed project would be constructed within existing TxDOT rights of way, and access to homes and businesses would be maintained at all times.

Utility relocation activities are scheduled to begin soon in preparation for this project, so residents will encounter workers installing new utility poles, water and sewer lines, gas lines, etc. Actual road construction is anticipated to begin in 2019.

TxDOT is committed to the citizens of Breckenridge and Stephens County, and we welcome any public comments concerning this or any other transportation project. Property owners along the project route have been notified by mail, though all citizens wishing to share comments are encouraged to contact TxDOT’s Brownwood District office at 325-646-2591, via email at www.txdot.gov/contact-us/form.html, or via mail at 2495 U.S. 183 North, Brownwood, TX 76802. Comments should be submitted by March 2.

The environmental review, consultation and other actions required by applicable federal environmental laws for this project are being, or have been, carried out by TxDOT pursuant to 23 U.S.C. 327 and a Memorandum of Understanding dated Dec. 16, 2014, and executed by FHWA and TxDOT.
