Parade, tree ceremony to light up Breckenridge on Saturday

When it was time to plan this year’s lighted Christmas parade, the staff at the Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce took into consideration everyone’s comments, suggestions and schedules. So, they once again combined the parade with the Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony in the little downtown park, but this year, they scheduled the event on Saturday, Dec. 9, so that it doesn’t interfere with the high school band’s contest schedule or with the Wednesday night church services.

Now, the Chamber – and everyone who loves a parade – needs the community to get involved and make sure there are enough entries in the event. The deadline to sign up is 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8. To register, go by the Chamber of Commerce at 100 E. Elm St.

The parade is open to organizations, businesses, churches, clubs, groups, even individuals. Parade entries can include cars, trucks, tractors, motorcycles, trailers, bicycles, groups of walkers, even horses. There are a few rules to be followed, and a list is available at the Chamber of Commerce and on the Chamber’s Facebook page. Two of the biggest rules are that none of the floats may have a Santa impersonator aboard (he’s expected to make an appearance at the end of the parade) and nothing can be thrown from the floats; parade participants may walk along the route and hand out candy, but it may not be thrown from the floats.

This year’s theme is “Let it Snow with a Warm and Cozy Ugly Sweater,” taking a cue from the popular party theme of “ugly Christmas sweater.” It is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. and will go east on Walker Street from Miller Street to Baylor Street.

Immediately following the parade will be the annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony and Christmas music by the Breckenridge High School band and local singers in the “pocket park” on the corner of Walker Street and Breckenridge Avenue.
