Horns honked and people waved, showing their Buckaroo spirit, as they drove past the fans who have started a 24-hour drumming session on the corner of Walker Street and Breckenridge Avenue.

Organized by members of the MOB – Mothers of Buckaroos – and other fans, the drumming started at noon Thursday, Nov. 16, and will continue until the Breckenridge High School varsity football team leaves at 1 p.m. Friday for the Bi-district playoff game in Brownwood.  Fans, including parents, grandparents, cheerleaders, fellow students and others, have signed up to pound on the spirit drums all day and throughout the night.

“We’re beating the drums so that we can beat Merkel,” said Cindi Woodward, ultimate Buckaroo fan and founder of the Bucks Live Facebook page. “It’s a tradition a lot of schools do.
We are starting it this year, the inaugural season. And, Glenda Knight, Kyler Knight’s grandmother, was the very first person (to beat the drum in the event).”

Woodward’s spot on the drum was at 3 p.m. Thursday. She joined Bill Smith, whose son Zach Smith will play in his first varsity game on Friday.

“It’s to show community awareness for 24 hours before the boys leave tomorrow (Friday) at (1 p.m.) for their playoff game,” she said. “We want the community to be involved, so they will go to the games and be aware.”

The Buckaroos, who won the District championship last Friday when they beat the Brock Eagles 30-28, will take on the Merkel Badgers in the Bi-district playoff game in Brownwood’s Gordon Wood Stadium. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17.

Woodward said the Buckaroos’ District championship pumped up the community. “Our side will be packed,” she said about Friday night’s game. “And, we’ll all have shakers and make noise, and they’ll know that Breckenridge is in the house at Gordon Wood (Stadium).”

Before the fans make their way to Brownwood Friday, they’ll have a chance to cheer on the football team at the BHS pep rally Friday morning, Nov. 17. Featuring the theme “Light That ‘B’ Bucks!” the pep rally will begin at 9:30 a.m. in LT Cook Gym.
