It was books not footballs that were the main focus at Buckaroo Stadium Tuesday evening, as Breckenridge residents showed up by the dozens for the second annual Buckaroo Book Night.

South Elementary librarian Abby Moore started what is becoming an annual tradition last year. This year, she continued with much of the same format — inviting the community to come out for a night that celebrates reading — and enlisted a variety of local “celebrities,” including school officials, to read out loud to groups gathered on the football field while families gather on blankets to read together.

The newly reorganized BISD Elementary ONE PTO got involved this year and provided concessions, face painting and more. Additionally, others from the school district and the community — adults and students — volunteered throughout the night to keep everything running smoothly and make sure everyone was having a good time.

One new element to Buckaroo Book Night this year was the book swap, which replaced last year’s book sale. Elementary students brought their gently used books and were then allowed to choose “new” books to take home from the others at the swap. The new activity seemed successful, as the kids happily walked among rows of books, picking out the ones they wanted to take home.

“It’s been a great night,” Moore said in the midst of the event. “We had great weather, again, and the book swap is fun. The celebrity readers are wonderful. We’re spreading reading…that’s what we love to do!”
