The Breckenridge campus of Texas State Technical College held its Fall Scholarship Banquet on Monday and handed out more than $9,000 in scholarships to local TSTC students.

The banquet, which brings together students and scholarship sponsors, is held at the beginning of each the school’s three semesters.

“Amount wise, we typically give out around $9,000 to $10,000 per semester,” said Debbie Karl, executive director of the Breckenridge campus.

At Monday’s banquet, there were $6,000 in TSTC scholarships and another $3,250 in outside scholarships for a total of $9,250.

Karl said the scholarships are for students who either attend the Breckenridge TSTC campus or attend another TSTC campus but live in the Breckenridge community.

While some donors target their scholarships donations to certain fields, such a nursing or environmental technology, Karl said if someone makes a scholarship donation to TSTC without any stipulations on which program it is used for, the TSTC Foundation will match it.

“So, if they donate $1,000, that turns into $2,000,” she said.

Because of the decline in oil prices, Karl said, they haven’t had as much income in donations as in the past. However, she said, they still have a healthy balance in their scholarship fund.

“If we give out $30,000 a year, we really need $30,000 back in to replenish it,” she said.
