On Monday, Aug. 21, Interstate 20 at State Highway 351 in Abilene saw a major traffic switch as eastbound traffic was diverted to the westbound lanes, including the newly-completed westbound I-20 bridge, according to a news release by the Texas Department of Transportation. The switch will allow contractors to begin preparations for the eastbound I-20 bridge demolition.

Also, beginning on Monday, SH 351 under I-20 will be closed for approximately two weeks while contractors finalize work at that intersection. Thru-traffic will be diverted to the regular detour along the frontage roads to either Loop 322 or FM 600 to cross the interstate.

TxDOT encourages motorists to allow for extra time to reach their destination while the detour is in place said everyone should be especially watchful for unexpected lane changes or closures, crew members and large, heavy equipment present in this and all work zones.

This project also will include installation of metal beam guard fence, concrete pavement, illumination, signage, and pavement markings. The expected completion date for this project is Spring 2018.

TxDOT routinely inspects state-maintained bridges to ensure that design and structural requirements are met. Upon inspection of the Abilene bridges, it was determined that the structures were due to be replaced and upgraded to meet modern design standards.
