The Breckenridge Texan was founded in August 2017 by Breckenridge journalists Tony Pilkington and Carla McKeown. They drew on the input of many other local citizens when planning this website and its contents.
Our Mission
The Breckenridge Texan is a nonprofit community news website dedicated to our mission of providing accurate, high-quality, current, local journalism to the residents of Breckenridge, Texas, and the surrounding area, as well as to those who are interested in the region. Our goal is to make a difference in the lives of people living here by informing and educating through a sustainable source for news, entertainment and sports coverage.

Our goal is to make a difference in the lives of people living here by informing and educating through a sustainable source for news, entertainment and sports coverage. The Breckenridge Texan is non-partisan and strives to be unbiased, fair and comprehensive in all of our reporting, as we adhere to the Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics. Nonprofit Status
From their first ideas about developing this website, Pilkington and McKeown wanted to ensure that Breckenridge would have a long-lasting, quality source for local news. With that in mind, they created the Breckenridge Texan as a nonprofit corporation. The Breckenridge Texan was created to inform, educate and entertain the citizens of Breckenridge, not to make a profit. That means, the website can take donations, as well as sell ads, and all proceeds will be used to ensure the continuation of the Breckenridge Texan and its goals. The news site has a board of directors, and a plan is being put in place to educate and train future publishers, editors, reporters, etc., so that professional journalism will be one of the main priorities of the organization. The Breckenridge Texan is a certified nonprofit corporation, as authorized by the Texas Secretary of State. The Breckenridge Texan is sponsored by the Institute for Nonprofit News (INN), a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. If you make a donation to us, please make it to INN and earmark your check for the Breckenridge Texan. Then, your donation will be tax deductible.
The Founding Board of Directors
The Breckenridge Texan currently has an initial Board of Directors that consists of Tony Pilkington, Carla McKeown and Scott Fitzgerald. They are overseeing the setup of the organization and will elect a permanent board to continue oversight.
The Founders
Pilkington and McKeown have extensive media experience, including daily, semi-weekly and weekly newspapers, blogs, website and radio. Before moving to Breckenridge in 2002, the husband and wife team published Lubbock Magazine, a monthly arts and entertainment publication. They also have freelanced for a variety of media companies, including Texas Highways, the New York Times, the Dallas Morning News, the Houston Chronicle, the Associated Press and many others. Pilkington is serving as Publisher and Managing Editor of the Breckenridge Texan, bringing to the position a long history as a photojournalist, writer and editor in cities such as Houston, Huntsville and Lubbock, as well as having been the editor of the Breckenridge newspaper from October 2015 to December 2016. He has developed and taught photography classes and designed websites for a variety of businesses. He also has experience in the radio industry. McKeown is serving as the Editor and Reporter of the Breckenridge Texan. She has spent much of her journalism career as a features writer and editor, including in Lubbock, Breckenridge and Graham. Additionally, she was the Editorial Adviser for the Department of Student Media at Texas Tech University for six years. She also has developed and taught classes on “How to Write Your Family History” and created a website, 365 Letters, which focuses on letter writing, stationery and other related topics.
