Buckaroos rack up second loss as Indians win with overtime field goal
In a game that saw the Breckenridge Buckaroos trading scores back and forth with the Comanche High School Indians, the winning score was a field goal in overtime by the Indians, who won 28-31.
After the fourth quarter ended at 28-28, the Buckaroos received the ball first in overtime play, but they failed to score on their possession. Starting out on the 25-yard line, the Indians were prevented from scoring a touchdown by the Buckaroos. But, they were on their fourth down with 12 yards to go on the 16-yard-line when Comanche kicked the winning field goal.

“Our kids did a great job fighting,” Breckenridge Head Coach Casey Hubble said. “I’m unbelievably proud of them. Kooper (Shook) went down early (with an injury), and we’re kind of scattered, trying to figure out what direction to go. You know, the whole game plan changed, but I’m unbelievably proud of the way our kids fought back. They gave us a chance to win. I didn’t do a very good job there in overtime. I tried to run a couple of different personnel packages, and it cost us. … I should’ve stuck with one package and gave our kids a chance. I did a bad job.”
The Indians scored first about 5 minutes into the first quarter. The Buckaroos answered with an 87-yard run by Owen Woodward with 2:38 left in the quarter. Justin Bell’s extra point kick was good, and the score was tied at 7-7.
The second quarter started out following the same pattern, with Comanche scoring at 8:38, and Breckenridge responding with a 29-yard touchdown pass from Woodward to Kyle Canada. Bell’s kick made the score 14-14 with 5:59 left in the first half. However, the Indians made one more touchdown before the end of the second quarter, and the teams went to the locker rooms with the score standing at 14-21 in favor of Comanche.
At 7:42 in the third quarter, the Indians pulled even further ahead, scoring another touchdown. A couple of minutes on the clock later, the Buckaroos’ Jonas Arellano ran the ball in from the 1-yard-line, narrowing the gap.

The Buckaroos held the Indians scoreless for the rest of regulation play and then tied the score with another Arellano touchdown. Both teams had a chance to score in the last minute of the game, but it ended with a tie score of 28-28, leading to overtime.
According to UIL rules, in overtime play, each team gets a possession, starting at the 25-yard-line. A coin toss determined that the Buckaroos would receive the ball first. An incomplete pass on the fourth down, led to Comanche’s possession. The Indians also failed to score a touchdown and on the fourth down kicked the winning field goal.
The final score was 28-31 in favor of Comanche.
“Our kids are fighters, they always have been and always will be,” Hubble said. “You have to in football. It’s a game that if you don’t fight, you don’t have a chance, and our kids are fighters.”
The coach said, looking back over the two games this season he sees some things the team has improved but that there are still areas they need to work on.
“We ran the ball a little better, I think. Defensively, we fit a little bit better on some key things,” he said.
“We’ve still got to tackle better and hold on to the football. Other than that, it’s very disappointing that we weren’t able to get it done.”
The Buckaroos finished the game with 372 yards of total offense on 53 plays, 288 rushing yards and 84 passing yards. Breckenridge was penalized 7 times for 50 yards. They had 18 first downs, 4 turnovers and 4 punts.
Comanche finished with 305 total yards on 53 offensive plays, 277 yards rushing and 28 yards passing. The Indians had 9 penalties for 60 yards, 17 first downs, 1 turnover and 6 punts.
Next week, the Buckaroos travel to Cisco to take on the District 4-3A Division 2 Loboes. Cisco lost to the Wall Hawks on Friday in Cisco. The score was tied at 13-13 until the fourth quarter when the Hawks scored the winning touchdown, making it 20-13. On Aug. 30, Cisco beat the Sweetwater Mustangs 49-27 in Sweetwater, 49-27.
Last year, Cisco had a 10-0 record, losing their first game of the season in the first round of the playoffs to Spearman, 29-33.
